The Artwork

She strides forward wearing her own flag, filled with the whole spectrum of brilliant color. She is powerful, magical, a fighter for justice. She is not afraid.

Liberty was inspired by Delacroix and his painting of Liberty leading the people toward victory. Quimetta Perle reimagines that figure as the real possibility of being led by a strong Black woman.

The flag is not a banner in her hands. It is her skirt, a sweep of fabric, beadwork and gold that carries every color at once. Built by hand, the piece is alive with movement, celebration and quiet vigilance.

Quimetta Perle

A feminist artist, poet and educator working since the 1970s, Quimetta Perle builds vivid mixed media pieces in fabric, beads and sequins. Her work celebrates the strength, beauty and resilience of women, and has been exhibited across the United States for more than fifty years.
