French Press Coffee: How to Brew a Rich, Full-Bodied Cup
Share
French press is one of the most forgiving brew methods out there — and one of the most rewarding when you get the details right. No paper filters means more of the coffee's natural oils end up in your cup, giving it a richness and body that's hard to match with other methods.
What You'll Need
- A French press (any size)
- Coarsely ground coffee
- Water heated to 200°F
- A timer
- A spoon or paddle for stirring
The Ratio
Use a 1:15 ratio — about 1 gram of coffee per 15 grams of water. For a standard 32 oz French press, that's roughly 60 grams of coffee to 900 grams of water. Adjust to taste.
Step-by-Step
- Preheat the press. Pour hot water into the empty French press, swirl, and discard. This keeps your brew temperature stable.
- Add your grounds. Use a coarse grind — think coarse sea salt. Too fine and you'll end up with sludge in your cup and a bitter, over-extracted brew.
- Add water and stir. Pour hot water over the grounds, making sure all the coffee is saturated. Give it a gentle stir to ensure even saturation.
- Place the lid on (plunger up) and steep for 4 minutes. Don't rush this. Four minutes is the sweet spot for a balanced, full-bodied cup.
- Press slowly and steadily. Apply even, gentle pressure. If you're fighting the plunger, your grind is too fine. If it drops with no resistance, go finer.
- Pour immediately. Don't let the coffee sit in the press after plunging — it will continue to extract and turn bitter. Pour it all out, even if you're not drinking it right away (a preheated thermos works well).
Troubleshooting
- Gritty cup? Your grind is too fine, or your filter screen needs replacing.
- Weak or sour? Steep longer or grind slightly finer.
- Bitter? Shorten the steep time or use a coarser grind.
